ABC Classic FM is broadcasting live the final performance of Wagner's Ring in Melbourne: I've just finished listening to Walkure and it is very good.
The live broadcast has a direct web link: the delayed broadcasts are accessible via the ABC web player.

Fri 6 December (Das Rheingold);
Mon 9 December (Due Walküre);
Wednesday 11 December (Siegfried);
Fri 13 December (Götterdämmerung).

The broadcasts start at 4:40pm Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time (GMT +11). There is a commentary running from 12:05pm and a lot more on the website.
Naked!Schepke is very distracting when I am writing Bellatrix/Antonin fic. *nods*. Come on f-list, how about a sentence to prompt fic about any of them? i still have Mysterious Plane Lurgy and am running short on prompts...
Internet intermittent. Marc & Jon fic not going away. Shipswap fic not finished. Marc/Unifex fic slowly getting there, keep getting sidetracked by Marc/Pat and Marc/Madeleine. Heydrich still not being a sub, no matter how often Schepke smacks him. *pout* At least the former is unclothed and the latter is in full uniform.

Good grief, I will be busy! RL is going to be the pits for the next few weeks, I have so much to do and so many ninja deadlines that have pounced upon me when I wasn't looking.

So did Harry/Bellatrix fic, with ickle!Lestranges and Rodolphus/Bellatrix which is delightfully sane and too happy for its own good, but I might shove that elsewhere for the time being. And hello there Heydrich fic, where did you come from after all this time? No, no, no that inviting alleyway marked "submissive Heyrich" is not allowed, totally off limits, let's not go there...
Dear Rarepair Fest Author,

Thank you for offerring to write these pairings! Most of them are a chance for me to discover something new -- I don't have any head-canon clinging to the pairings like false dreams to the tree of sleep -- I've just taken characters who pique my interest and want someone to run wild with them. I am happy with het, slash or femmeslash in stories and am open to fics of any rating. (Just in case you're that reader thinking "Wow, this letter is really vanilla, I'm not sure my idea of "Oh, anything!" is the same as hers," if it isn't in my squick list, it's fair game.) General information on my likes and dislikes is followed by fandoms under a cut. Previous letters can be found under the "fandom: fests" tag.

Likes: Multi-dimensional characters, political/social intrigue, characters whose views are consistent with their setting or canon (e.g. a) In canon Hermione is sympathetic towards house-elves, don't make her treat them like furniture; b) In Rome slavery was perfectly normal, it would be remarkebale for a Caesar not to treat his slaves like furniture), banter, sexual tension (requited or not), military uniforms, dubious consent, power dynamics.

Squicks: Bestiality, necrophilia, setting translation (e.g. turning first-century Rome into a high-school), scat, rapefic.

Soundly thrashed in college elections (Arts & Research Officer). Free food and excursions to Royal Albert Hall concerts 42 : Open mic karaoke nights in manor 72. Out of 112 votes, so 2 people voted twice, despite oblivious returning officers.

...At least a non-committee spot means it isn't compulsory for me to attend the General Meetings! Last week's started at 7 and finished at midnight.
How much are people writing for shipswap? I've just cleared the 8 100 word mark with one lousy kiss. Plot just keeps getting in the way! My historical muse is treating my het-pairing muse with the sort of disdain a large dragon might direct towards a rickety, wooden bridge.

Oh, and mctabby? I borrowed the illustrious Marvolo and Valery lines to name in the midst of a long and boring rant on the decline of wizarding, upper-class society: I hope that that is acceptable? (The Gaunts can pack their incestuous penury into snake-skin bags and return to Deliverance HBP canon, thank you very much.)
Yes, yes, JKR's brain runs on Bistromathics. Now I know why I stay away from Marauder-era fic: the entire timeline is even more of a mess than Tom Riddle's time. Oh, dear... Nevertheless, I hope my f-list can help me out:

a) Does anyone take the dates on that blasted Family Tree seriously? Wizards with Muggle lifespans! Does the entire family suffer from "Remillard disease," an early-onset, violent death caused by other relatives?

b) Is it fanon that Rodolphus Lestrange (married to Bellatrix) is the elder of the two brothers? The Lexicon says that:
There was a thickset man who stared blankly up at Crouch; a thinner and more nervous-looking man, whose eyes were darting around the crowd...
Putting our information from GF and OP together, one of these men is Rodolphus Lestrange (Bellatrix's husband), and the other is his brother Rabastan, but we don't quite have enough information to tell which is which.

c) Does the contrast of Andromeda and Bellatrix to Narcissa imply that the former two are twins? (Both Andromeda and Bellatrix are tall and dark-haired, whereas Narcissa is blonde. Bellatrix marries suitably but has no offspring, Andromeda is disowned for marrying unsuitably and only Narcissa produces an heir to a pure-blood family.) More importantly, is there any information to refute this?
A useful plural reference. Most of these families make complete sense with a Latin background, but the French-derived (-stolen?) ones do catch me out.

(It transpires that the plural of precis is precis. Pointless trivia for the day.) I thought that the French plural differs somehow?
I intended to have a snarky, Bellatrix-loses-her-temper and other-DEs-make-snide-remarks paragraph in my fic, but shortly beforehand my muse decided that Voldemort should burst into song. Imitating a Valkyrie.

This is not crack fic! Bad muse! *bangs head on desk*
...and his jawline and his fingers and his neck, are really, really distracting. I honestly don't know what part of him to oogle shamelessly next.

OLD cut: click on cut → go to entry page → immediately show text in corresponding div
NEW cut: click on cut → stay on main page → wait...
...animated full stops appear in the middle of the page
...wait a bit more
...make some tea
...animated full stops start changing colour
...see content on same f-ing page so I don't have a URL for it.
NEW tag: lj-cut and lj-spoiler now seem to do exactly the same thing???

How do I replace the new cut with the old one? This isn't an issue for me when posting since I do all of that through DW; reading is another matter. What is a short, user-friendly piece of code that even the HTML-ignorant people on my f-list can use instead of these new LJ-cuts that break my browser?

Starting suggestion:
<b>(<a href="[entry url]#[cut nr]">cut text</a>)</b><lj-cut> ... contents of cut ... </lj-cut>
Has anyone actually tried reading a book on that site recently? Previewing books is the primary motivation for a visitor to the site. What is the most difficult thing to do after you've found a result? That's right: read it. There is no image-to-text support1), totally inadequate zooming2) and no option to change the fore- and background colours.3) Saving the png files to the computer and reading them in GIMP is easier than trying to use the Google books interface. Congratulations Google! I have now become a copyright-offending pirate precisely through attempting to use a resource that you developed to prevent wholesale scanning-and-downloading of books.

1) Yes, on some books there is the option of text-only reading, which in turn might allow text-to-speech. I present the result for Grimm's Fairy Tales:
Actual textGoogle text
Der Froschkönig oder der eiserne Heinrich
In den alten Zeiten, wo das Wünschen noch geholfen

3n ben alten 3«íí", we baê SBunfdjen nod) geholfen
Ijat, teilte ein fiönig, beffen ïodjter maren aQe fd)ín, aber

2) On the smallest zoom setting, I can't even fit a whole page into one frame because google reserves on the order of 50% of the vertical space for whitespace (blackspace, in my case) and a useless toolbar. On the largest setting I can read one line at a time like am I still using tickertape and a teletyping machine.

3) Even Astronomy & Astrophysics manage this: they have scanned pages, one gif per pdf page, that can be viewed properly with eg. orange text on black to minimise eyestrain. Unless one uses Adobe, which makes a hash of it. (Freeware Foxit Reader > expensive Adobe Acrobat -- not Acrobat Reader -- is another story.)

Dear Shipswap Mystery Writer,

If you are a pinch-hitter, you may want to read this first". Thank you for your enthusiasm in diving into the dark and oft-ignored corners of fandom! I realise that I have chosen really tiny fandoms so I shouldn't be picky, especially if you are an unfortunate pinch-hitter confronted with their reams and reams of canon. Aside from the pairings specified, I have no problems with either het or slash/femmeslash in secondary pairings or backstory. I honestly don't mind what rating my present is: please don't feel like you've cheated handing in a thousand words of G-rated fic! I have tried to offer some general information about my fic preferences and squicks below, with more detail in the individual fandom cuts.

There is Napola fic!
Is this good because there are so many missing-scenes and epilogue possibilities?
Or is it bad because it's more than likely all Friedrich Weimer/Albrecht Stein wangst?
At least there will be uniforms...
For those of you who are clueless about my <i>Parsifal</i> post, this is Peter Hofmann:

This new flist page is really, really awful. Who wants a DW invite code, so they can jump ship before the rush? I think I still have one.

Seriously, has anyone tried it and actually liked the new page? The only reason I don't abandon LJ and move to DW altogether is that LJers who commented to my posts on DW had no effective way of getting my replies without checking each individual post. Thus, no conversation. If there were an inbox system that covered global replies rather than just local ones, I would be set! (I.e., Suppose that my Open ID account is on DW. If I post in DW, I get all replies sent to my inbox. If I post outside of DW, I get no replies in my inbox. Thus I ahve to maintain a DW and an LJ account. If I could change that to send replies in LJ to my DW inbox,, I would be very happy.)

On another note, I would like to replicate my LJ theme in DW, but that takes a lot of work. :(
For future reference:
Still can't find Lorenz' or Hofmann's autobiographies (in German).
Looking for Nilsson, Hotter and Varnay's, thankfully in English.
Parsifal discography must be insane: Hotter was *not* singing in the 1980s in Wagner roles!!

Still have fic to finish. Still have only uni computers. :(
Must start caldendar! Again, uni compuer and Nazifetisch LJ = disaster.

Here's their next move: The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, would obliterate any semblance of online privacy in the United States.

And CISPA would provide a victory for content owners who were shell-shocked by the unprecedented outpouring of activism in opposition to SOPA and Internet censorship.

The House of Representatives is planning to take up CISPA later this month. Click here to ask your lawmakers to oppose it.

SOPA was pushed as a remedy to the supposed economic threat of online piracy -- but economic fear-mongering didn't quite do the trick.

So those concerned about copyright are engaging in sleight of hand, appending their legislation to a bill that most Americans will assume is about keeping them safe from bad guys.

This so-called cyber security bill aims to prevent theft of "government information" and "intellectual property" and could let ISPs block your access to websites -- or the whole Internet.

Don't let them push this back-door SOPA. Click here to demand that your lawmakers oppose CISPA.

CISPA also encourages companies to share information about you with the government and other corporations.

That data could then be used for just about anything -- from prosecuting crimes to ad placements.

And perhaps worst of all, CISPA supercedes all other online privacy protections.

Please click here to urge your lawmakers to oppose CISPA when it comes up for a vote this month.

Thanks for fighting for the Internet.

If this is something that will work for you, if you are willing to give up the rest of your style in order to get comment pages that vaguely resemble the ones we had until a week ago, here's what you do:

YES, YES I DO! I want my drop-down icon list back! I don't want comments filled with AJAX! I'm sick of multiple-second lags when expanding comments! But most of all I want subject lines back! I don't know how on Earth the RP journals are coping... Damned workaround only works for paid accounts. This is a big chunk of the reason I've moved my journal to DW, but it doesn't fix the behaviour when commenting on other people's journals. Has anyone seen the old behaviour in their journal or otherwise?

If you're from the UK and you believe in freedom of speech and an uncensored internet, you really need to sign this petition. There are others floating about, but that particular one is the best way to ensure that your voice gets heard. It's hosted on the directgov website and addresses parliament directly. If it gets more than 100,000 signatures, it becomes eligible for discussion in the House of Commons.

Everyone's been getting so worked up over SOPA -- and rightly so -- that ACTA seems to have slipped under the radar. This is hugely problematic, because ACTA is a similar bill, but it has the potential to be far more damaging than SOPA ever could be.

Some people seem to have this misconception that ACTA is the 'European SOPA', but that simply isn't true. It's a global treaty, and it's already been signed by eight countries, including the US, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Europe votes on Thursday. If they vote 'no', the bill will have to be taken back to the drawing board and reformulated, which should buy us some time at the very least.

If you think this doesn't affect you, you're wrong. If ACTA passes, it could well signal the end of the internet as we know it, and that isn't an exaggeration. It's not just about watching movies and television online. If ACTA passes, sites like YouTube, Livejournal, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and even Google and Wikipedia could become impossible to maintain. ACTA would allow ISPs to monitor your net activity and cut off internet access for your entire household if one person is suspected of breaching copyright. Think Big Brother is Watching. I don't think I need to emphasise just how damaging it can be to be without internet access in this day and age, when we rely so heavily on technology.

It's not only bloggers and fandom that would be affected, either. Small businesses, independent film-makers and unsigned musicians who have previously found their niche online would also suffer hugely, and would be at risk of being bullied into submission by Hollywood and multinational corporations under accusations of copyright infringement. All those artists who found fame by uploading covers of songs to YouTube would never have had the opportunity to do so under ACTA, as those cover versions would be prohibited.

I know the internet has its problems, but to my mind it's the single greatest invention to come out of modern times, and it would be an absolute travesty if we were to lose that now. From a personal point of view, I can't even put into words how important this is to me. I've met some of my closest friends through the internet and online fandom, people whom I would likely never have met without it, and it's given me this amazing social support system. I don't want that to end here, and I want to preserve it for future generations so that they can have the same experience and opportunities I've been given through my online interactions.

I know that opinions on the seriousness of copyright infringement and online piracy vary wildly, but that isn't really the point. Internet giants such as Google are opposed to this bill, and it's pretty safe to say that they're not in favour of copyright infringment, as anyone who's ever had a fanvid taken down from YouTube will be painfully aware. Whatever your stance on copyright, this isn't the way to go about dealing with it. This is dangerous legislation that impeaches on some of our most basic human rights, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech.

So if you're from the UK, please, please sign the petition. If you hail from elsewhere in the world, there may well be similar movements in your own country, but I think the most effective thing anybody can do right now is to keep talking about this. Talk about it on Livejournal, on Twitter, on Tumblr, on Facebook, and anywhere else you can think of. Make sure this issue is never far from people's minds. The internet is an amazingly powerful tool: let's utilise it while we still have the chance.

Please repost and spread the word :)

Please consider reposting this, especially if you have a large proportion of UK flisties. And please consider spreading the word via other platforms: Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, your own personal network.

I can't even log in via my Dreamwidth account to solve this problem! If there were options for plain HTML entry and the old user icon list, most of my gripes would be solved, but noooo...

Totally porting Reich Writing to Dreamwidth now. If I can manage two communities, I'll create a new Wagner appreciation one over there as well. Time to turn on DW crossposting again...
I did intend to continue writing tonight, but then I found this. Two of my favourite fandoms, some music and too much hilarity. I think it broke my brain. I'll just go and dance around my room yelling "IT FITS! IT FITS!" The two shows combine flawlessly, like Thomas Kretschmann and SS uniforms.
